DON BOSCO in Mongolia

Help us to build in yurt district of Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia

NEW COMMUNITY CENTER

Shuvuu and its needs

Four thousand people live in the small village of Shuvuu, about 30 km from the center of Ulaanbaatar. They have many children but live in poverty. Many families still live in traditional yurts without bathrooms or running water and must haul water from the parish well, even during the long winter, when temperatures drop to minus 40°C.

Holy Family Parish

Holy Family Parish has been active in one of its
yurt districts for over 25 years. Over that time, it has
earned the trust of the local people.

Current situation and services

The parish’s ministry encompasses not only spiritual and evangelistic work but also a wide range of educational and social activities: a yearround youth center offering recreational  programs, classes in languages, dance, and computer skills, as well as sports activities, a clean water service, a feeding program, and more.
Around 100 people participate in these activities annually, about half of whom attend regularly.

Seeds of hope

The new Church of the Holy Family was consecrated in 2023. In 2026, four young people were baptized there, and another twelve entered the catechumenate.

Lack of suitable facilities

However, suitable facilities for key activities are still lacking. During the long winter, there is no kitchen, no toilets or running water, and insufficient space for activities or staff facilities.

Our plan

The old parish building lacks insulation, and most of its doors open directly to the outside. Operating it in winter would therefore be extremely costly. Construction experts recommend building a new, well insulated building rather than repairing the existing one, which would then be used only during the summer.

Therefore, we plan to build a new community center in 2027 between the church and the old building, allowing yearround
operation at a lower cost.

The first floor (approx. 230 m²) will house a kitchen with a dining area, two
classrooms, sanitary facilities, and a staff area. It will also include a garage and a utility room for solar inverters and batteries.

The second floor (approx. 80 m²) will contain an additional classroom and accommodation for the pastor, volunteers, and guests. This floor will cover only one third of the first floor, with the remaining area forming a terrace.

Help us make a difference together
